Welcome to Acadæmia, a symposium for discussions on a wide range of intellectual and scholarly topics. We are a group with diverse interests and specializations, but all of us share an appreciation for the pursuit of knowledge and wisdom. The admittedly pretentious and alienating Latin phrase at the top of the page, “non scholae, sed vitae discimus,” means that “we learn not for school, but for life.” Through the cultivation of knowledge, we seek to enrich our own lives while benefiting the lives of others. You can expect to find a broad range of posts on this page; among the contributors are students, researchers, and educators (often all at the same time) with focuses that span across numerous disciplines from the physical sciences to the humanities and beyond.
We welcome comments and contributions from any number of perspectives, asking only that participants think critically in their writings and engage in respectful dialogue and debate. Personal attacks will not be tolerated, especially if they are insufficiently entertaining and/or witty. We also ask that participants try to refrain from using jargon that makes their writing too difficult for non-specialists to understand; at the very least, please try to define uncommon terms.
Thank you and enjoy,
The Contributors
